A job search now focuses almost entirely on finding jobs online. In fact, most newspapers now have an online edition where they may post job listings they do not include in their printed version. Having online access for your job search is critical. That’s where the vast majority of job listings are viewed.

There are a number of job listings on websites such as Monster.com and Yahoo.com. You can also find job listings on sites such Craig’s List and just about every community has a local job listing site. If you are looking to relocate for your next job, every major city has a number of job sites that are updated on a daily basis.

Another important aspect of a successful job search is to update your resume, especially if it’s been awhile since you last searched for work. Looking at resume examples and resume templates is a good way to get started. Such examples and template are easily found on the web as there are over a hundred websites offering professional resume assistance. Take the time to look at a number of different resumes and templates. It never hurts to look for new ideas as you might find something that can really improve your chances of landing a job.

Whether you use a resume template or not, update all the information on your resume and make sure all dates, times, address, names and job descriptions are accurate. If you include references on your resume, it’s a good idea to call them to make sure their contact information is still the same. Chance are that one or more of your references may have a different phone number or email address since you last spoke to them.

Since it’s best to have a resume that you can tailor to the job you’re applying for, make sure you can easily make minor changes in your resume to suit the particular job you are interested in. You may need to emphasize your education, for example, on one resume while on another, you may want to focus on your experience and job history.

Next, ask yourself why you are looking for a new job. Does your present job not pay enough? Are you looking to change careers? Find something closer to home? Once you know why you’re looking for another job, you can focus on what you need to do to make sure you find employment.

The first step in your job search should be a re-examining of your career goals and financial needs. Maybe you’ll decide to look for a new line of work or taking on a position with more responsibility. Of course, everyone wants a high-paying job. We’d all like to make as much money as possible. But that’s not the only thing that’s important. Having a short commute, certain working hours, or working for a company that provides day care can be important as well. Make these kind of decisions before you start your search and things will go a lot better (than if you start your search unsure about what you are looking for).

Ask for help. A job search can be very time-consuming and a bit stressful. For some, it’s an emotional roller coaster. It’s Ok to ask for help. Having someone who can help you with printing resumes, stuffing envelopes, and mailing letters can be a great relief.

Resume and cover letter. Next is to update your resume (or create an entirely new one). Chances are that it has been awhile since you last looked for work. If it’s been more than ten years since finding help with your last resume, things have changed! The Internet is now the main source of help. There are a number of websites that offer resume services, some of the “self-service” variety. On these sites, you have access to resume templates and sample resumes. Some let you create a resume on line while others ask that you download or purchase their software program.

The search. Once again, the best resource for job hunting is the Internet. You can find job posting sites for both local and national jobs. Don’t forget the companies in your local community. Most have a website with a jobs listing section. Most of these companies don’t advertise their openings and it’s up to you to find them. There are also recruitment websites where you can post your resume and make yourself available to any employers who use the site to find new hires. Imagine that! A potential employer seeking you out and offering to speak with you about a current opening.

But most of the time, it’s not that easy. A successful job search takes a great deal of time and energy. And also a great deal of persistence. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of being at the right place at the right time. The more effort you put into it, the more your chances improve.
