When you apply for a job, your cover letter and resume are the first things that a recruiter, HR person or potential employer sees. Just as if you were trying to sell a product, it’s your job to “sell” yourself to potential employers. Your sales “pitch” should include the following:

1. You are the best choice for this particular job
It’s the job of a good resume to get the attention of the employer. In some cases, sending the same resume to a number of different employers is acceptable. But, to get the best results, tailor your resume to address the particular needs of each job posting. Doing so is the first step in convincing a potential that you are not only a good choice for the job, but the best choice.

First, you have to identify the key qualities required for the job. For example, it might be very important to the employer that the person they hire can speak a foreign language or be able to travel. Or maybe they want someone who has experience with a particular product or service. Once you identify the needs of the employer, you address them directly.

If they are looking for some who speak a foreign language, make sure that is emphasized on your resume and use key words such as, “fluent in Spanish,” “comfortable with conversational French.” If travel is part of the job description, include the fact that you enjoy travel, has a current passport, and have experience when it comes to finding your way to the hotel or a good local restaurant.

2. You can meet the challenges and demands of the job
It might be the case that you will be replacing someone in the company that didn’t move on to another job but was let go or fired.

3. You can solve a particular (or set of particular) problems for the one who hires you.
When an employer posts a job listing, they are first and foremost looking for someone who has solutions to the problems at hand. For example, they want someone who can increase sales of a specific product or someone who can improve the image of their company. Or they might be having trouble with recruiting qualified workers and they are looking for someone to help them hire better workers.

4. You have the education, experience and skills needed for the job.
If you are applying for a teaching position for example, be sure to include a section on your resume about your schooling and degrees earned. If the job listing mentions that they are looking for someone with extensive experience in a particular area, address that by including not only how many years experience you have but the type of experience you have—give examples and details. Using bullet points works well for this kind of information. If you are applying for a skilled position, mention not only your experience, but your training as well.

Along with your cover letter, your resume is your first contact with a potential employer. In most cases, the purpose of the resume is to get you to the next step in the recruiting process. When it comes to reviewing resumes as part of recruiting job candidates and filling openings, the person reviewing resumes usually has two stacks. One for qualified candidates and one for the recycle bin. Obviously, you want your resume to end up in the stack of qualified candidates.

But just because you have the qualifications and experience needed for a particular job, your resume must demonstrate that. If you don’t know how to prepare a resume that shows you at your best, that reflects both your qualifications and potential, yours will end up in the recycle bin.

In order for your resume to be effective, it has to laid out in a logical order. Traditionally, the reverse chronological resume is the form most often used. This type of resume lists your last place of employment first followed by the one previous to that, and so on. If you’re not sure of which type to use, this style is the best bet.

It’s best if you keep your resume to one page. Keep in mind that the person (or persons) reviewing your resume are no doubt busy people. That further demonstrates the importance of the information you include on your resume. Most potential employers don’t make final decisions based on resumes alone (that’s what job interviews are for). But a good resume gives you a chance to get to the interview stage. Remember, your resume is your introduction, your list of qualifications, and your chance to prove that you are the best one for the job (or at least one of the best). Your resume is very important in that sense.

A great resume may very well cut down on the competition for the job. How? Well, you can probably count on a small percentage of your potential competition taking themselves out of the running with a poor resume . We’ve all seen resumes with typos and misspelled words and they usually end up in the recycle bin. Other resumes from the competition may be grammatically correct but dull and devoid of important information. That leaves a handful of candidates just as qualified as you. Your goal is not actually getting hired based on your resume, you simply want to proceed to the next step in the job selection process.

Another reason your resume is so important is it gives you a chance to address specific issues a particular employer is sensitive to. For example, a particular company might have a problem with a high turnover rate or finding employees who are willing to travel. Of course, in order to address these issues, you must be aware of them. Always research a company before sending your resume. By taking the time to make a few minor changes before sending, you can tailor your resume to a particular company’s needs.

If you already have a resume, you may be wondering how it can be made better. If you don’t want to write an entirely one, there are a number of things you can do to improve your current resume.

 1. Check for accuracy of information, typos, and misspelled words. The first step in improving your resume is to give it a meticulous going over. But be warned, you might find a mistake or typo you didn’t notice before! Also, be sure that all the information is accurate (that includes double-checking if you have the most current contact information

2. Use the proper format. Ask yourself if your resume is in the proper style for your line of work and work history. Most resumes are reverse chronological which simply means that your last job is listed first. If you a highly-trained worker with specific skills such as a carpenter, mechanic, fabricator, or repair person, a functional resume might be best. It allows you to emphasize your skills by listing that information first with a detailed description of your experience and training. The third resume format is a combination resume which incorporates elements of the two above.

3. Update your references. It’s a good idea to contact the people that you list as a reference and make sure their information is up to date and accurate. When you speak with them, remind them that you have listed them as a references so they are prepared if a potential employer should call.

4. Include your job objective. You’d be surprise at how many people forget this! The first step in stating your objective is to be clear on what you are looking for. Here’s an example: “I’m looking for a sales position where I can use my writing and marketing skills to improve sales.” This gets right to the point and tells the potential employer exactly what you are looking for. Or, you might say: “I’m hoping to find an opportunity for growth in project management.” Those who review resumes, recruiters working in human resource example, appreciate a clear job objective as it makes their job easier.

One of the most important “secrets” for writing a good resume is to include action words. Examples of actions words are: “created,” “organized,” “developed,” “implemented,” and so on. Action words give an potential employer the feeling that you are a person who gets things done. Also, such words paint you as a person with a great deal of energy and initiative. Many people applying for a job fail to realize that the company that posted the job opportunity is looking for “solutions” from the person they hire. They have a particular set of objectives and responsibilities for the new hire to fulfill and if you can convince the employer that you can measure up to these challenges, your chance of getting the job is quite good.

Another important secret for writing a successful resume is present your work experience in terms the employer understands. For example, if you are in sales, make sure you use numbers, percentages, and sales goals in your resume. “I increased sales in my department by 50%” is the kind of thing a sales-oriented company is looking for. If you say, “My team exceeded our sales goals every year for seven years” it shows you understand the importance sales figures and projections.

When writing your resume, it’s important that you put yourself in the place of the person who will be reviewing it. What are they looking for? What’s important to them? What can you do to convince them you are the best person for the job?

Companies such as WinWay, Resume Maker, Resume Writer, Power Resumes, and My Resume that offer such things are eye-catching phrases, resume samples, resume themes and templates. Some offer help with using search engines to help you find job openings while other have a list of the most popular job websites.

Beyond the basics mentioned above, a number of resume software programs keep track of all of your most important contacts, tips on how to schedule an interview, and how to follow up after the interview is over. Most, if not all, offer a spell checker, thesaurus, over a hundred fonts, and the ability to insert graphics into your resume.

What to look for. Perhaps the most import features is ease of use. Just about everyone finds writing a resume a real chore (some much so, they put it off and don’t write one at all). The software you choose should be easy to understand and help you complete resume in a relatively short period of time. Second, there are some basic features that you’ll definitely need such as being able to save your resume as a PDF file if required by an potential employer. Also a necessity are a good number of resume examples and resume templates to help you see as many options as possible.

Some programs offer help with key words and phrases and gives you ideas of which would be the most effective for your line of work. There are some resume programs that use a “wizard” which asks you questions as a part of creating resumes. These wizards often recognize the kinds of problems that will lead a weak and ineffective resume. They will actually ask you if you want to keep certain elements it sees as detrimental to your resume and job search.

Beyond the actual resume. Most resume writing software commonly includes tips and guidelines for your job search. This includes tips on how to do your best at a job interview, how to use the Internet in your job search and how to submit your resume online. Many of these software companies offer phone support to answer any questions you may have.

Using a predesigned resume template can be very helpful. This is particularly true if you are writing your first resume or it’s been a while since you wrote your last. One of the challenges of writing a great resume is deciding on proper form and structure. Templates do some of this work for you. For example, some templates will provide spaces (entries) for your name, address, phone number, email address, previous employers, dates of employment, and references. Some provide structure in the form of headings, subheadings, and bullet points.

It’s not too difficult to find free resume templates online (as well as examples in books and magazines). It’s a good idea to take a look at a number of different template before deciding on the one right for you. To make the final decision, choose a template that displays and organizes your information in the most effective way possible. Make sure you find a template that allows you to include all pertinent information for the job you are applying for. You may find that a different template will be needed for different employers.

The downside of using as template is most are quite ordinary and don’t leave a lot of room for being creative. Think about the person who will be reading your resume. They might review as many as 50 to 100 per day. You want to make yours stand out and using a predesigned template may not be the best way to do that.

Note: More and more companies are giving job applicants the option of submitting their resume online. This is done using a “submission form.” It’s very important to know that when submitting your resume this way, much of your formatting will be lost. This includes fonts, paragraph marks, bullet points, italicized text, and tabs. The degree of formatting lost varies from company to company so read their instructions very carefully. And don’t worry if your resume look plain when submitting it online. All the other submissions will look that way as well. When submitting online, concentrate on accuracy and impact and don’t worry too much about style and appearance.

To make your resume in a satisfactory manner by a template, you should get the person to whom it is intended that the document does not think is in the hands of a template curriculum vitae, but think you’ve worked hard to reach this design as successful and attractive. No dejes la plantilla tal y como la descargas, modificando tus datos y tu experiencia. Do not let the template as you download it, modify your data and your experience. Spend some time to modify aspects of the design and distribution to suit your personality. For example, think that the resume of a photographer should never be even close to a dentist one.

If you have any doubt of how to customize your curriculum vitae templates, we created articles that is sure to be interesting to learn tricks that we have ever used.
