Even during a recession, there are plenty of job available if you are willing to put in the effort to find them. If you find yourself saying, “There’s nothing out there,” you are not looking hard enough. Today, especially with the Internet as a resource, it’s just a matter of learning where to look and what to do when you find a listing that interests you.

The job listings you never see. Some job statisticians claim over 60% of all available jobs are never advertised or posted. Whether or not this is an accurate number, it shows that you need to dig deep into your job search. Sometimes finding a great job requires a little detective work. But rather than getting on the phone and calling local employers to see if they have any openings, you go online and do some research. Some job hunters have simply decided on which company they would like to work for and contacted that company’s human resources department via email (rather than the phone as email is now the accepted way to contact job recruiters). With a little luck and good timing you might find a great job using this approach. Also be aware that most major companies and organizations have a section on their website for current job openings. Take the time to look. You will no doubt find a number of jobs that are not advertised outside the company. Multiply this by ten different companies and you should uncover a number of job openings you didn’t know existed.

Networking. Even though you may be a little discouraged with your job search and not feel like socializing, it’s important that you meet as many people as possible who are either in the same situation as you (looking for work), or people that help you find work. Gatherings like employment seminars and job fairs are often the best opportunity for your to make important contacts. We’ve all heard stories of how being at the right place at the right time lead to a great job. And we can all probably remember a time when we had a family member or friend help us get a job with their company. Talk to as people as you can and tell them straight away that you are looking for a new opportunity for employment.

Learn how to use search engines. Websites like Google can go a long way in helping find work if you know how to enter the proper search parameters. Simply typing something like “Nurses needed New York” could lead to a list of openings in the New York area. The same can be done for other occupations and other cities and towns. Sometimes, you have to search a number of other sites the search engine lists. But with a little time and effort, your chances for finding work improve. You may even find your dream job!

During a recession, there are fewer jobs available and the competition for each position can be intense. There are a number of things you can do however to increase your chances of getting that job.

Be persistent. First and foremost, keep trying! It’s difficult to keep looking for work when you’ve been turned down even once, not to mention several times. But during slow economic conditions, persistence is the key. The average time it takes someone to find a job during normal economic conditions is about six months. During a recession, it may take you up to nine months to find new employment.

Make yourself stand out. One way you can up the odds of getting a job is to have a professional review your resume and cover letter. They will give you good advice along with suggestions of resume templates and sample resumes to help you create the best resume possible. Beyond that, there are career guides that can help you in many ways. Such a guide can help you focus on things that will make you the best candidate. They’ll help you with everything from what to wear to helping you discover where your true talents and abilities lie. Another way to set yourself apart from the rest is to be as friendly and cooperative as possible. Even when speaking with some by phone, it’s important to sound upbeat and positive.

Take advantage of as many resources as you can. There is a ton of good advice on the Internet about carrying out a successful job search. Expect to spend at least an hour a day searching for the kind of advice that will help you land a job. Most websites do a good job of providing the kind of information that will help you succeed. Some of these sites are free and some require you pay for such information. You might also check your local library or bookstore to help in your search.

When it comes to job listings, there are at least ten well-known websites that post available positions. Most require that you create an account on their site to have access to their job listings. Along with that, most allow you to post your resume on their site and they make it available to potential employers and recruiters. If you do so, it’s important that you include certain keywords the apply to your occupation. For example, if you are an office manager, be sure those keywords appear words at least twice in the resume you post. For further help with this, there will probably be resume templates and resume samples on each website you use to post your information.

Other resources that will help you find a job during a recession include workshops and job fairs. Your local community will probably hold several such meetings during the year. Take advantage of them as they are also a great way to use your networking skills to discover job openings you would normally not be aware of.

When looking for jobs online, there are number of websites that post job listings on a regular basis. The major job sites are Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, and Yahoo.com, all of which provide the same basic services. Along with job listings arranged by category and location, these websites allow you to post your resume for potential employers to review.

One of the big advantages of using such a website as part of your job search is most have a job alert function. This means that when a job is posted in your category of employment, the website automatically generates you an email to alert you of the new posting. This can be a great time saver as you don’t have to constantly log on to the website to check for new job postings. These websites will also keep track of recently viewed jobs, jobs you have submitted resumes to, and they all help you assemble a list of jobs you are interested in.

Many job websites will help you create a resume using a resume template they provide. Most have a number of sample resumes you can look at for ideas on how to make yours as good as it can be. Monster.com also offers career tools (to help you decide what kind of work is best for you) and helps you build a job profile to aid you in creating resumes and cover letters. On monster.com and others, you can also find an advice and resources section to help you prepare for your job search.

When visiting job websites, be sure to take a look at all they have to offer. CareerBuilder.com for example, offers a number of job search tools including:

Help with distributing your resume A resume critique service A free salary calculator Career tests to help you decide on what type of career path to follow A service for creating a resume (including resume templates and sample resumes) Skills training Advice on how to get the most out of job interviews.

Most cities and local communities have their own job websites. They have a variety of names but all serve the same purpose—helping you find employment. An Internet search engine such as Yahoo can help you find job websites in your area.

Don’t forget to check with local job websites such as your local Worksource (originally created to help those receiving unemployment compensation find local job opportunities), local governmental job listings, trade and occupation websites such as a local teacher’s association or union websites.

Finally, most medium to large companies dedicate a page or two on their website to post current job openings. Some allow you to apply for a job online directly to their human resources department. There are a number of advantages to looking for work on company websites. Many post salary information for a particular job opening along with information about insurance benefits, paid vacation, and holidays.
