The job listings you never see. Some job statisticians claim over 60% of all available jobs are never advertised or posted. Whether or not this is an accurate number, it shows that you need to dig deep into your job search. Sometimes finding a great job requires a little detective work. But rather than getting on the phone and calling local employers to see if they have any openings, you go online and do some research. Some job hunters have simply decided on which company they would like to work for and contacted that company’s human resources department via email (rather than the phone as email is now the accepted way to contact job recruiters). With a little luck and good timing you might find a great job using this approach. Also be aware that most major companies and organizations have a section on their website for current job openings. Take the time to look. You will no doubt find a number of jobs that are not advertised outside the company. Multiply this by ten different companies and you should uncover a number of job openings you didn’t know existed.

Networking. Even though you may be a little discouraged with your job search and not feel like socializing, it’s important that you meet as many people as possible who are either in the same situation as you (looking for work), or people that help you find work. Gatherings like employment seminars and job fairs are often the best opportunity for your to make important contacts. We’ve all heard stories of how being at the right place at the right time lead to a great job. And we can all probably remember a time when we had a family member or friend help us get a job with their company. Talk to as people as you can and tell them straight away that you are looking for a new opportunity for employment.

Learn how to use search engines. Websites like Google can go a long way in helping find work if you know how to enter the proper search parameters. Simply typing something like “Nurses needed New York” could lead to a list of openings in the New York area. The same can be done for other occupations and other cities and towns. Sometimes, you have to search a number of other sites the search engine lists. But with a little time and effort, your chances for finding work improve. You may even find your dream job!

Most cities and local communities have their own job websites. They have a variety of names but all serve the same purpose—helping you find employment. An Internet search engine such as Yahoo can help you find job websites in your area.

Don’t forget to check with local job websites such as your local Worksource (originally created to help those receiving unemployment compensation find local job opportunities), local governmental job listings, trade and occupation websites such as a local teacher’s association or union websites.

Finally, most medium to large companies dedicate a page or two on their website to post current job openings. Some allow you to apply for a job online directly to their human resources department. There are a number of advantages to looking for work on company websites. Many post salary information for a particular job opening along with information about insurance benefits, paid vacation, and holidays.
