There are three major types of resumes: reverse chronological, functional, and combination. The reverse chronological resume is the most common. With this type of resume, you list your work experience starting with your most recent job then continue back in time ten or twelve years. Most potential employers prefer this type of resume as they can easily see your most recent employers.
A functional resume highlights particular skills and training. When applying for skilled positions (plumber, mechanic, electrician, etc.), a functional resume is your best choice. Also, if you have a great deal of education and training in your profession, a functional resume allows you to present that information up front.
A combination resume uses elements from a reverse chronological and functional resume. This type works well if you don’t have a lot of job experience or a long history of employment.
There is another type of resume and that’s one that follows no particular format. In certain cases, especially when applying for a position that requires a certain amount of creativity, a resume with its own unique style and format can make a positive impression. It’s important to remember that the person reviewing your resume (particularly if the company has its own human resources department) might see hundreds of resumes every day. If yours is a bit different, you might just get their attention. Don’t use this technique however if the job you are applying for is academic, governmental, or scientific in nature—stick to traditional resume styles and templates. However, if you are applying for a job as a photographer, designer, or publicist for example, your own, unique resume may get you to the next step of the recruiting process.

It can be very helpful to examine a number of different examples of resumes before creating your own. There are three main types of resumes.

1. Reverse chronological resume
This style of resume lists your work experience in reverse chronological order with your most recent job listed first. Typically, you should list jobs going back 10 or 15 years unless you’ve had a large number of different jobs during that time (then pick and choose the most important). This type of resume pushes experience to the forefront and your work history becomes the main body of the resume. Reverse chronological is the style most often used but that doesn’t mean that it works for all applications. .

2. Functional resume
A functional resume focuses on skills in a particular area and provides specific details about how those skills were used. You might use a functional resume of you are a machinist, repair person, auto mechanic, installer, or factory worker. For example, if you are a mechanic who’s trained in the repair of a certain type of auto (Saab, Ford, Honda, etc.), a functional resume is your best choice. A functional resume is also best if you are making a career change or don’t have a great deal of work experience.

3. Combination resume
This type of resumes draws on the features of both chronological and functional resumes. But such a combination is not necessarily the “best of both worlds.” If you create a combination resume, you must be very careful to not repeat information. This type of resume works well if you have a great deal of experience in a number of different areas.

The personal touch
As you are looking over the many resume examples, keep in mind that a resume is personal in the sense that everyone likes to add their own special touch. So from an appearance standpoint, you will see hundreds of different resumes with just as many fonts, styles, and formats. Of course you can personalize your resume, but don’t get too caught up in doing so. Keep your resume simple and don’t’ stray too far from the basics. “Fancy” resumes are no more effective than traditional resumes. In fact, a fancy resume often detracts from the important information they contain. And remember, if you submit your resume online, most formatting will be lost.

What is a CV? CV stands for “Curriculum Vitae” which in Latin means “Course of life.” The word CV is most often seen in the academic, science, and medical professions. Essentially, the terms CV and resume are synonymous.
