Passing an interview

The most important thing you can do to have a successful interview is to be prepared. This means much more than being sure you are dressed appropriately. You can dramatically increase your chance of having a great interview if you:

• Learn as much as you can about the company you are interviewing with.
• Find out who will be interviewing you and learn about them as well.
• Have extra copies of your resume.
• Try to anticipate any and all questions you may be asked and make sure you will be able to answer each question intelligently and confidently.
• Keep your emotions in check and have a calm demeanor.
• Be on time, or better yet, a little early.
• Remain confident, positive and upbeat throughout the entire interview.
• Realize how important the interview could be in getting the job.
• Smile.
• Don’t forget to ask questions about the position and all it entails.
• Thank the person interviewing you.

Most people get nervous before a job interview, especially if it’s for a job they really want or they are in need of a job in pretty short order. Interviews can be very stressful so it’s important that you make a strong effort to stay relaxed and calm. It’s OK to pause for a few seconds before answering a question and it’s even OK to ask the person interviewing you to repeat a question (but make sure you do this only once or twice during the interview or it will appear like you are not paying attention).

When preparing for your interview, a good technique is to not try to imagine what the interview will be like. The reasoning behind this is if things don’t go like you imagined they would, you are not surprised or unprepared. Keep an open mind and take cues from the person who is interviewing you, but at the same time, make sure you get to ask questions that are important to you.

Being prepared also means that you provide the person interviewing you with the kind of detailed information that gives you the best chance to get the job. If you’ve done your homework, you’ll know exactly what they are looking for. Then it’s a matter of convincing them you’re their best choice.

And don’t forget to double check your resume. If you are not sure on the format, go online and look at sample resumes and resume templates.
