Cover letters Examples and Templates

A great cover letter is just as important as a great resume. But they must compliment each other. In other words, mention your resume in your cover letter. First, by saying that it is attached, and second, by reminding the reader that all the information they need is included in detail on your resume. If you use a cover letter template or base your letter on samples of other cover letters, be sure the result still sounds like it was written in your words.
The main components of a cover letter are:
A personalized address to the reader. You should never, ever write a cover letter to “whom it may concern” or “manager” or “human resources department.” Always get the name and if possible, the title of the person you are writing to.
Introduction. State your name, how you heard about the job and why you are applying at this particular time.
Express interest in the position. This is where you tell the reader why you are interested in the position. Be brief but specific.
Sell your skills and experience. Give the reader (potential employer) a good idea of what you have to offer and why your particular skills and experience can benefit them.
Thank the reader. You’d be surprised how many people forget to do this! Keep in mind that it takes time to review a resume and it’s important that you show your appreciation.
Invite them to contact you. This can be as simple as “please call me at your convenience.”
Lay down plans for follow up. You should always offer to discuss the position further.. For example: “I will call you in the next few days to discuss my qualifications in detail.”
Write a cover letter that is clear, concise and easy to understand. One mistake a lot of people make is writing in too formal a manner. It’s not necessary and will be a bit annoying most of the people reading it. A good cover letter is friendly, conversational and upbeat. Using a cover letter template can be helpful as well as looking at other covers for ideas.
